CEBU, Philippines - The regional champion delegate from Bacolod City was declared the country’s fastest San Miguel beer drinkers during the 12th installment of San Miguel Brewery Inc.’s National Beer Drinking Contest held in Cebu last November 4.
Held at the vast Pueblo Verde, MEPZ II in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, seven beer-guzzling teams all across the nation faced off and tried to beat or replicate last year’s record of 53.73 seconds nailed by delegates from Northwest Greater Manila Area (GMA).
Clocking in a time of 45.06 seconds, and surpassing last year’s winning time, the Sweet Mama Boom five-member team of Bacolod City beat their competitors from Mindanao and Luzon for the P500,000 cash prize. They also received San Miguel Beer promotional items.
Second place went to GMA North Luzon Area who brought home P200,000 for consuming five bottles of San Miguel Beer at 47.30 seconds, while South Luzon Area’s Samahang Magbabakarda was rewarded with P100,000 pesos for finishing third place at 47.44 seconds.
The Central Mindanao team was supposed to be the fastest with a time of 43.37 seconds, but a spillage penalty disqualified them from entering the top three.
Meanwhile, the nationwide beer-drinking contest officially kicked off last May with a media edition held in Metro Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro and Davao. The FREEMAN-Cebu team made up of Rene Borromeo, Flor Perolina, Edwin Ian Melecio, Paul Jun Rosaroso and Rey Pasaporte was declared champions in the SMB Beer Drinking Contest Media Edition National Finals. They were rewarded P50,000.
What’s a beer-drinking fest without music? Alternative rock band Rocksteddy and the reggae group Brownman Revival revved up the 300,000-strong crowd with their playful repartees and head-banging hits. (FREEMAN)
