CEBU, Philippines - It seems not too long ago when The Loft, a club-resto at the Asia Town IT Park, launched its new wing named The Penthouse. Its proprietors back then highlighted the state-of-the-art lights and sound technology within its four striking walls—similar to Manila hotspot The Embassy and “unrivalled by any other club in the Visayas region.”
After hosting big clubbing events, distinguished local and international DJs, and even a fashion series since it was first unveiled during last year’s Sinulog mardi gras, The Penthouse is now celebrating its first anniversary.
Positioning itself as a premier dance club, The Penthouse regularly features world-class Filipino talents (such as the 2010 Urban DJ of the Year Ace Ramos and Philippine topnotch DJ and pioneer in the dance and electronica scene, Elmer Dado) and flies in an international DJ each month for the ultimate Cebu clubbing experience. They have had a stellar line-up of international spinners in its initial year of operations such as DJ Aldrin and DJB of Singapore, John 00 Fleming, Paul Thomas, Jim Rivers and Grammy nominee Andy Chatterley of the UK, Joel Lai of Hong Kong and Ricky Ryan of Argentina.
From the US, The Penthouse was also privileged to have brought in Kaskade, Junior Sanchez and DJ Colette, the only internationally respected female DJ to play in the city and the only DJ who sings live while spinning.
You might wonder why the Penthouse is aggressive in getting the best DJs all over the world to our city and shelling out so much in the process.
“We want to let Cebuanos who don’t travel abroad a lot experience international DJs. At the same time, those who’ve been traveling a lot will get to hear the same DJs that they’ve experienced abroad right in their own city,” says Charles C. Osmeña, The Penthouse’s current marketing man.
Part of their thrust this year is to promote Penthouse’s five-resident all-star talents: RnB and hiphop DJs Carlow and Alan; and the house trio of Jan, War and Mael.
Osmeña also announced to The FREEMAN that this year, they will be searching for two more in-house DJs via a contest whom they will develop from scratch.
“It will be our pride to have accomplished DJs who are associated with the Penthouse,” says Osmeña.
Tomorrow night, the Penthouse will celebrate its first anniversary with DJ Ace Ramos & MC Dash, together with Rnb Hiphop Parallel Carlow & Alan.
Then on March 20th, a Saturday, New York-based two-time Grammy winner Eric Kupper will be leading the party together with House Trinity Jan, War & Mael.
According to his MySpace profile, major label artists who have taken the Kupper treatment include Usher, Alicia Keyes, Cher, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, Kylie Minogue, Korn, Jessica Simpson, among others. He has worked on dozens of Billboard number one dance records and has mixed two records that have received the “Dance Record of the Year” Grammy award.
