TechTutor5 on Sept. 24 to tackle ‘gamification’

MANILA, Philippines - Business technology analyst and educator Jerry Liao will conduct his annual seminar TechTutor on Sept. 24, 1 to 5 p.m., at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Techtutor is on its fifth year and Liao is also bringing it to Davao on Nov. 12 as part of its anniversary celebration.

In TechTutor 5, Liao will tackle “The Gamification of Education.” Gamification is the incorporation of game elements into non-game settings like education, among others, and attempts to harness the motivational power of games and apply it to real-world problems.

Gamification may be used to motivate students to learn better and care more about school. For it to work and be effective, it must be clearly defined, must be evaluated for its benefits and drawbacks, explore current implementations and future possibilities, and better understand the theoretical rationale behind gamification.

“Gamification provides the opportunity to experiment with rules, emotions, and social roles,” said Liao. “Schools worldwide are incorporating gamification into their teaching activities to make learning more engaging and exciting.”

Aside from gamification, Liao will also discuss other areas of technology like augmented reality, social media, security trends, and cloud computing.

Liao will be joined by Pocholo Gonzales (Asia’s leading voicemaster), Olen Juarez-Lim (professional image development consultant), chemistry professor Johansen Tiu, concept artist and college lecturer Noel Flores, UP professor and JRP instructor Archie Lawrence Geneta, and more. Technology experts from Microsoft will also discuss Windows 8.1 and Office 365.

TechTutor5 is supported by Acer, AMA University, Brother, Canon, Dell, Engenius, Fujifilm, Globe Telecom, HP, iSecure, Kaspersky, Lenovo, Microsoft, Philips, Samsung, Smart Communications, Sony, and WSI.

“It’s going to be a celebration, knowledge-sharing and a fun day as we celebrate the fifth year of TechTutor. At the same time, this will give me and other experts the opportunity to share our knowledge to our fellow educators, school administrators, parents, and learners” said Liao, who himself is an educator as well for more than 25 years.
