From overpopulated Mumbai to smog-drenched Shanghai, modern cities are reaching their critical limits because of increasingly scarce resources such as space, energy and water. Now, with half of the world’s population living within the urban sprawl, cities are bracing for the next frontier—environmental sustainability.
This has prompted the United Nations as well as other global organizations to demand the construction of more sustainable communities. “We firmly believe that sustainable development is the key to the future of cities in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large,” read the Hong Kong Declaration, an outcome of the United Nations Asia-Pacific Leadership Forum: Sustainable Development of Cities. Participants of the UN-led discussion also agreed to advance the issue of environmental sustainability in their respective cities.
In the Philippines, this vision of greener cities is already being championed by Alveo Land, an Ayala Land company. “We sat down to plan on how we can build a residential development geared towards modernity and environmentalism,” said Jennylle Tupaz, Alveo Land’s division manager for project development. “This led us to create our most ambitious project yet—one that champions the green lifestyle for Filipino families: Treveia.”
