Speaking before graduating students of the UP College of Architecture during their 43rd Recognition Rites and Commencement Exercises held last April 27, Recto reminisced about the college where he graduated more than 30 years ago and urged future architects to think of the occupants when designing a building. They must create healthy buildings incorporating green architecture for the benefits of the users.
He lamented that in the 60s and early 70s we were the leaders in Asia in architecture, interior design, construction, art, music and technology. But now, we are far behind our Asian neighbors. He also urged professors not to disregard the positive effects of constant encouragement and helpful appreciation on the students.
Recto expressed his faith in the ability of the Filipino people to overcome trying circumstances. He mentioned that Filipino architects are sought-after everywhere. They are the work horses behind the scene in almost all major architectural firms in the world.
Recto also reported that the Philip Recto Awardees, namely Ingris Araneta, Tisha Cukingnan and Ligaya Maceda, are all doing well working in Singapore and Australia despite of the recession and retrenchment going on there.
UP architecture dean Prosperidad Luis also announced the winners of the "2003 Philip Recto Design Excellence Awards" for best thesis. They are: for best design/planning thesis: Ma. Cecilia Gatapia, Laraine Jazel Macapagal and Patricia Mae Tan. For best research thesis: Karen kaye Ang, Ristalle Bautista and Caryl Lesley Tan, For best landscape architecture thesis: Abigail Ladim, Cherisse Santos and Riza May Sta. Teresa.
