‘Everything we can do in one car’—it’s not every day you get to hear those words as the guiding principal behind a new automobile. But this is exactly what the all-new Lexus LS is all about, and undoubtedly, the Lexus flagship sedan impresses with its exquisite blend of world-class refinement, luxury, and innovative advanced technology.
Since its launch in 2006, the current generation LS is the epitome of Lexus’s “relentless pursuit of perfection” mantra with over 2,500 improvements. And for 2012 the new LS adds another 3,000 changes including three world firsts, and no less than 15 Lexus firsts, in features and technical innovations.
Outside, the Lexus LS has been comprehensively redesigned. Taking on the new design language pioneered by the GS and ES launched earlier this year, the LS features the bold and sophisticated spindle grille design which evokes a more powerful and commanding presence. The surrounding bodywork is then projected outward joining the new, deep bumper design and capped off with flared wheel arches. The headlamps themselves can be equipped with all-LED lighting, including vertical fog lamps incorporating the world’s smallest PES lens and unique L-shaped seamless light tube Daytime Running Lights.
At the side, the rocker panels and door moldings have been changed, accentuating an image of air flowing smoothly. New door mirrors now feature chrome-plated ornamentation and incorporate LED puddle lamps and new LED turn signal indicators.
Over at the rear, the LS reflects the spindle grille design with flowing lines that cut across the trunk surface accentuating the LS’s purposeful stance. First introduced in the LS, L-shaped motif inside the rear lamp clusters completes the new trapezoidal design. The rear lamps now adopt LED technology throughout adding depth and crystal-like clarity. The light guide LED lamps form a clearly visible L-shaped signature whether on or off.
Inside, the new LS takes on the “human-oriented” interior design which is a fundamental part of the L-finesse design philosophy. The LS features a cockpit with a more horizontal-based layout offering a much more comfortable and ergonomically ideal interaction with the vehicle’s various systems. The dashboard is designed for utmost comfort with its clean and elegant form. These changes are complimented by the world’s first Advanced Illumination System (AIS) which features Champagne White interior lamps and dynamic LED instrument lighting. The Shimamoku wood accents on the steering wheel and dashboard serve as the unique Japanese touch to the LS.
Passengers can revel in the support provided by the improved seating. The climate control system itself incorporates a new Nanoe technology system which purifies the air and eliminates unwanted odors. The same system also incorporates moisture particles which give a moisturizing effect on skin and hair. All these functions are automatically incorporated into the Lexus Climate Concierge air conditioning system which features up to 13 sensors managed by a central ECU.
The range-topping four-seat variant adds ottoman rear seats with 40-mm more rear legroom as well as a hideaway rear table and a built-in seat massager.
For the driver, the LS features a new instrument panel that incorporates large diameter dials and a 5.8-inch TFT multi-information display nestled between the needles. And following the lead of the CT and GS models, the LS now adopts a Drive Mode Select system with meter illumination and multi-information display design. The steering wheel takes a departure from the norm with a smaller diameter, three-spoke steering wheel for a sportier feel. Finally, the asymmetric gear lever is now clad in leather for a more comfortable grip.
At the center, a new analog clock precision-machined from aluminum features a Lexus-first GPS-based time-correction function. The light-emitting hands and scale have been shaped to be as narrow as possible accentuating the sense of fine craftsmanship. Right on top of it sits Lexus’s award-winning Remote Touch Interface or RTI which offers comprehensive infortainment control via the industry’s largest, 12.3-inch LCD multi-info display screen. The LS’s comprehensive suite of entertainment functions includes a 19-speaker Mark Levinson Reference Surround system and a Blu-ray player for the 4-seater model.
The new LS represents Lexus’s peerless pursuit to make it the most quietest, most comfortable car in the world and several comprehensive improvements have been made to its drivetrain and suspension to make this possible.
First, the LS features a Lexus-first hallow-chambered noise reduction alloy wheels which lower front cabin noise. Second, it incorporates a new laser screw welding technique that offers joint adhesion across entire surfaces as opposed to individual spots, increasing body rigidity by 60 percent. Third, the number of engine support member joints has been increased along with a larger tunnel brace and larger partition panel reinforcements. Lastly, the LS’s new skin features a coefficient of drag at just 0.26—making it the most aerodynamically efficient car in its segment.
The engine, though a carryover from the previous model, has been enhanced to improve efficiency and power while lowering emissions. The 4.6-liter V8 under the LS 460L has the highest output among normally aspirated V8s in the premium segment, developing 387 hp at 6,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 493 Nm. Mated to an 8-speed automatic, the LS can accelerate from 0-100 kph in just 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 250 kph.
Priced at P7,388,000 for the 5-seater and P8,378,000 for the 4-seater, the Lexus LS is clearly designated for the privileged few who value comfort, luxury, and refinement above everything else. And with the all-new Lexus LS, it can’t get any better. It is indeed everything that Lexus can do in a car.
