Audi R8 LMS wins in Macau

MANILA, Philippines - Audi driver Edoardo Mortara celebrated his third consecutive victory around the street circuit in China in the recently concluded Macau Grand Prix held last November 17 to 20. Following his two Formula 3 races in 2009 and 2010 at the wheel of a Volkswagen-Dallara, Mortara became the first driver in history to win the Formula 3 Grand Prix twice in succession.

This year he contested the Macau GT Cup for the first time and won this event in an Audi R8 LMS GT3 by 6.47 seconds. Titled the Star River-Windsor Arch Macau GT Cup, Mortara qualified in 1st position at Saturday’s session with his Audi car no 66.

In an interview, Mortara comments on how he ran the race. “Indeed I had the best position with pole on the front row and was also confident, but this is by no means a guarantee for a successful race. Everybody knows just how difficult this street circuit is, and there were 31 cars on the grid. There was actually an accident due to oil on the track after two laps. Six opponents retired due to this. The race was interrupted to repair the barriers. I had to concentrate hard over the remaining laps. It’s great that things went so well. The Audi R8 LMS is fantastic.”

He goes on further to say, “I’m absolutely delighted about my first win in the Macau GT Cup. It was great to win my first GT race on the street circuit after the two Formula 3 victories. The competition in Macau was obviously much stronger and the street circuit is unforgiving. I’m just happy to have been able to have such a great motorsport season with Audi in the DTM and also to have won two GT races in China to finish on a high.”
