Phl beverage makers urged to seize opportunities in Canada

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino beverage manufacturers are encouraged to explore the immense business opportunities in Canada amid the growth in the sales of single-serve coffee systems.

“...Tap into the growing craze among beverage aficionados to be able to have the satisfaction of brewing their own beverage with consistent results,” said a market report furnished by the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Citing a market research firm Euromonitor, the report said the market for single-serve coffee pods is pegged at $725 million a year in Canada, and is projected to grow to almost $1.8 billion in sales by end of 2017.

“Consumers gravitated to the single-serve format as it promised more convenience, improved consistency and fewer excess and wasted brews,” it said.

The report, also provided to the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. (Philexport), noted that 73 percent of Canadians over the age of 16 consume on average two cups per day, and 63 percent of them brew their own coffee at home.

Apart from coffee, single-brew systems pertain to other beverages such as tea and cocoa.

“There is even speculation that a soda system would be put in place as well. Moreover, more eco-friendly manufacturing and materials are being put into consideration in the proliferation of single-brew systems,” it added.
