R&D Notes wins DOST-PCIERD award

The Philippine STAR recently received an award from a government research council for regularly maintaining the "R&D NOTES" in its Sunday Agriculture page.

The media institutional award presented to The STAR was among the Kabalikat awards conferred by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development (DOST-PCIERD) at a recent program marking the celebration of its 23rd anniversary.

This is the third consecutive year that The STAR received the Kabalikat award for "continuously espousing science and technology development through its regular column titled "R&D NOTES".

Rudy A. Fernandez, who has been writing for "R&D Notes" four years now also received the Kabalikat award (print media category) for the third consecutive year for his coverage of the food, energy, construction, metals, and engineering sectors.

Other recipients of the awards were:

• Angelo Palmones of DZMM – broadcast media category, "for his sustained effort in disseminating and promoting PCIERD-assisted programs and projects via his radio program titled ‘Bago Yan Ah!’."

• Alternative Fuels Division, Energy Utilization Management Bureau, Department of Energy, headed by Director Teresita Borra –Government Collaborator award, for being PCIERD’s partner in the promotion of the natural gas vehicle (NGV) and compressed natural gas (CNG) technology and spearheading the utilization of natural gas for the transport sector.

• Growlandtech, Inc., headed by Isidro C. Valencia – Private Collaborator award, "for having been long-time partner of PCIERD in its R&D activities, particularly in conducting tests and optimization of the activated carbon technology, and eventually adopting the technology."

• University of the Philippines-Building Research Service (UP-BRS), headed by Director Nathaniel Diola-Academe category, for having "successfully completed the project on the Compendium of Indigenous Building Materials and Technologies (CIBMAT) which is available in an electronic database and a resource book."

• De La Salle University-College of Engineering, Academe category – for its involvement in R&D activities on environment and for giving extension services to PCIERD by assigning resource persons in seminars and training courses.

• Japan External Trade Organization headed by Toshio Asakura, president – Foreign Collaborator award for its "involvement in manpower development on environmental protection and energy conservation and management and for the conduct of energy audit on food manufacturing companies and the iron and steel industry."– RAF
