Conversations in our mind

Our minds are noisy. They are filled with thoughts every minute of every day.

As a matter of fact, some thoughts are so busy and insistent they interrupt my sleep and wake me up in the wee hours of the morning. These thoughts carry raw ideas though and I understand that they are important.

And so I wake up, go to my keyboard and bang away as I know that ideas like these are floating somewhere between my conscious and sub-conscious dimensions and if I don’t seize and note them down right away I might lose them quickly.

Waking up and getting up in the middle of the night is extremely inconvenient. I really can’t go back to sleep anymore the moment I start banging away on my laptop keys, but not doing so may prove to be costly.

What if those ideas would bring you the business breakthrough you have been waiting for? What if they are seed ideas for a project that would not only bring in money, but would also help people who are in need?

And the most important thing of all, what if those ideas are indeed “God talk” as He is dealing with you in some certain areas of your life that need fixing?

There are conversations that still take place within our minds even while we’re wide-awake. I remember popular author and speaker Denis Waitley saying “the Most Important Meetings You’ll Ever Attend Are the Meetings You Have With Yourself.” These are meetings that we hold constantly.

Conversations that take place in our minds are running commentaries and we seldom are even aware that we are having them. This is why we need to be mindful and need to be careful of the conversations we have with ourselves.

Those conversations may be encouraging and they can likewise be disparaging as well. They can either build up our courage to do great things or convince us that we are useless and helpless.

Waitley says: “Be aware of the silent conversation you have with yourself. Are you a nurturing coach or a critic? Do you reinforce your own success or negate it? Are you comfortable saying to yourself, “That’s more like it.” “Now we’re in the groove.” “Things are working out well.” “I am reaching my financial goals.” “I’ll do it better next time.”

There are also silent conversations within our mind that are destructive.

Conversations that say:

“Hey, that new receptionist is really pretty, what if I just flirt with her a little…”

“No one would know….”

“How come I’m the one doing all the work and he is the one making all the money? I don’t deserve this.”

Everything begins with the mind and this is why I am not surprised to find that the Scriptures focus so much on the need to be conscious of it and the thinking process.

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”

Here’s another one: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Take good care of the “thought life.” Fill it with lovely and delightful things. Right thinking equals right living. It’s as simple as that.
