MANILA, Philippines - Amihan Energy Corp., a renewable energy company run by the Rodriguez family, expects to commission the first phase of its 65-megawatt (MW) wind power project in Cebu by October this year.
In a chance interview with The STAR, AEC chairman Joaquin Rodriguez Sr. said about 10 MW of the wind power farm will be initially available to the grid.
He said they have spent about $25 million of the total project cost of $190 million for the first phase.
The wind power project is being pursued by AEC with partners Mudajaya Berhad of Malaysia and Dongturbo Electric Co. Ltd. of China.
Mudajaya Group is one of Forbes Asia’s 200 Best Under a Billion companies. It has $541 million in sales, $78 million in net income and $463 million market capitalization.
He said they expect to complete the entire project in two years time.
Aside from wind energy, AEC is also eyeing to put up a five MW garbage-to-power project near the Manila area.
He said they are still finalizing the feasibility study on the renewable energy project.
This is the first time a renewable energy company would be putting up a power project in the Visayas.
The Philippines sources 35 percent its total power requirements from renewable energy sources.
