Attending a conference

I am abroad attending a conference and will resume my comments on the issues of the day on July 16, 2010.

The MVP of Philippine Sports

The Board of Trustees of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) is extending its advance (July 14) birthday greetings to Manuel V. Pangilinan, president of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), and patron of Philippine sports, particularly basketball and boxing, among others.

An advocate of “excellence in performance” not only in business but also in sports, Manny adopted and gave full support to the concept that schools and collegiate teams that aim higher and reach out for loftier goals should be properly recognized and rewarded. He believes that sports programs of schools should motivate and push their athletes to reach for higher success.

“At its core, sports is ethical and value based. And competitive sport is, by its very nature, a value-added activity,” Pangilinan, who is also better known as PLDT-Smart’s chairman and Meralco president and COO, has said in various occasions.

For collegiate basketball, Manny gave more meaning to the annual search for the best teams in the country by providing the necessary sponsorship funding for PCCL to conduct the Philippine Collegiate Championship games, a season-ending competition to crown the year’s Philippine Collegiate Champion. The eventual annual winner is permanently recognized and etched in the MVP Perpetual Bronze Sculpture, “Abutin Ang Tagumpay,” symbol of collegiate basketball supremacy.

The PCCL competition is nationwide in scope with multi-level phases leading towards the gathering of the 16 best collegiate teams to compete in the “Sweet 16 Finals” where “knock-out” games are held until one team is declared the Philippine Collegiate Champion.

To the MVP of Philippine sports, happy birthday and may you realize your birthday wish of seeing Philippine sports at higher level of success.
