Globe Telecom acts to protect subscribers from text spam

MANILA, Philippines - Mobile phone firm Globe Telecom is implementing a stronger subscriber-reporting mechanism and blocking policies against the proliferation of text spam.

Globe regulatory affairs head Froilan Castelo said the company is implementing control measures on text spam to protect their subscribers. “Spamming and sending fraudulent text messages are a misuse and abuse of our network. It is our duty to ensure that our network and our subscribers are protected against spamming activities,” he said.

Proposed anti-spam measures implemented by the telecom carrier include the blocking of accounts from using Globe promotions as My Super Text or My Super Unli.

Globe subscribers who receive spam texts are asked to report these through Globe’s 211 toll-free call-in service via any Globe or TM mobile or through landline at 730-1000. Reports may also be submitted online by logging on to the Globe website or by sending a private message to Globe’s Facebook account (www.facebook.com/GlobeAngel). Private tweets may also be sent to the official Twitter account @Talk2Globe. All reports must include the sender’s number, the actual message, and the date and time the message was received.

Spam texts may take the form of promotional offers, advertisements, surveys, and political propaganda. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) bans any group or individual from sending unsolicited messages via SMS unless they are duly registered and granted permits by either the NTC or the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Meanwhile, Globe announced that it is giving back to its small and micro business partners who have helped make reloading prepaid lines much more accessible to millions of Filipinos.

In a country where 97 percent of all mobile phone subscribers are prepaid users, Globe Autoload Max retailers play a key role in ensuring that subscribers can easily reload prepaid credits to their Globe or TM phones.

Globe has launched the Ka-Globe Retailers’ Club—a membership program for Autoload Max retailers nationwide that gives top Ka-Globe retailers access to a wide variety of freebies, discounts from top merchants in the country and front row tickets to events put together by Globe. Retailers include sari-sari stores, canteens, bakeshops, beauty parlors and market stalls, among others.

“It’s our way of saying thank you to our partners for helping us expand the business and to reach out to millions of subscribers nationwide,” Globe consumer sales and after-sales head Ferdinand dela Cruz said.

To be a Ka-Globe Retailers’ Club member, Autoload Max retailers simply have to reach an average monthly transaction volume of P5,000 for three months. The larger the transaction volume accumulated, the greater the rewards.

All Ka-Globe Retailers’ Club members receive their own membership cards which entitle them to various benefits such as free personal accident insurance, low medical consultation fee, and discounts in boat fares, food and apparel purchases, recreational activities and courier services, among others.

“Globe cares not only for the well-being of its subscribers but of its business partners and traders as well. The Ka-Globe Retailers’ Club is our way of giving back to our loyal retailers who continue to support us in our undertakings,” Dela Cruz added.
