Tuna firm invests P43M for new process

General Tuna Corp., a subsidiary of Century Canning Corp. is investing P43.003 million for a new canning process for raw tuna which will initially be exported to France.

The company actually applied for a pioneer status with the Board of Investment (BOI) for its processed tuna project explaining that it will use new technology in processing raw tuna.

In its application papers, General Tuna Corp. explained that the production of raw pack tuna eliminates the pre-cooking phase that is undergone by double cooked canned tuna products.

Given its distinct method of canning, raw pack tuna production requires special plant facilities, General Tuna Corp. explained to the BOI.

However, the BOI approved General Tuna Corp.’s project on a non-pioneer status without prejudice to a later upgrade after the company secures an endorsements from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) that the raw pack tuna production process indeed involves new technology.

General Tuna Corp.’s plant is located in Barangay Tambler, General Santos City, South Cotabato.

The plant’s projected capacity is 161,580 cases or 1. 125 metric tons.
