PARIS – Golden statues of historical Frenchwomen emerged from the waters of the River Seine during the Olympic opening ceremony on Friday, a spectacular nod to the gender equality at the heart of the Paris Olympics.

Figures including writer Simone de Beauvoir and politician Simone Veil have been immortalized in gilded statues and will be maintained in Paris after the Games.
