DTI tells LGUs: Promote further local products

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Trade and Industry-Cebu Province has asked local government unit officials in Metro Cebu to assist barangay officials in the conduct of profiling products made and sold in their barangays.

DTI-Cebu Province Business Area Development Head Elias Tecson visited the different cities and municipalities in Metro Cebu to personally relay his request.

Tecson said barangays in Metro Cebu and in the whole province should know the products that need proper marketing and promotion to help boost the livelihood of the residents.

According to Tecson, a number of people start their businesses locally and that they need support not only from the local government officials but from the other national government agencies.

He said DTI is willing to provide financial support to individuals, groups or institutions that can submit proposals on the promotion of their products.

In Mandaue City, Mayor Jonas Cortes said the city ‘government, through the Association of Barangay Councils, has assured DTI that it will help the city’s local businesses.

In fact, Cortes said operators of small to medium enterprises have already availed of the city government’s assistance through the city cooperative.

For his part, Compostela Mayor Joel Quiño said producing queso is one of the municipal government’s long term plans.

Compostela received an initial financial assistance from the Department of Tourism for the promotion of the Queso Festival which the town has adopted as its official festival. (FREEMAN)
