Now you’re Sinulog-ready. Pit Señor! The Fiesta Tradition

CEBU, Philippines - Fiestas are a big thing in Filipino culture. These are celebrated with the holding of a novena – nine days of Masses followed by special prayers for the patron saint.

A town fiesta is one of the events that people look forward to. Months before the fiesta, people would already make preparations such as fattening their pigs and chickens in anticipation of the fiesta celebration. Of course, the fiesta is also an occasion for holding family reunions.

The town plaza is usually turned into a mini-market where vendors sell clothes, toys, fruits and native delicacies. The streets, too, are adorned with colorful buntings.

During the fiesta day, the feast of the patron saint, a high Mass is celebrated by one or several priests. After the Mass, the residents then feast on the food that they have prepared in their respective homes. (www.livinginthephilippines.com) Jannica Manlupig (FREEMAN)
