Why Listen to classical music

CEBU, Philippines - Music is part of our everyday life. May it be the chirping of the birds on a cheery morning or the new CD of a famous singer, music is everywhere.  People of every age listen to different kinds of music: pop, rock, jazz, classical, among others. But did you know that classical music can give you benefits?

Studies say that classical music can boost your creativity. Your brain has two parts, the artistic side and the scientific side. Music can be processed on both. It can make a strong connection between these two parts and blend image with logic, thus expanding your imagination until it explodes with originality.

Classical music also helps brighten your mood on a bad day. Compositions by Haydn and Handel can help you overcome depression and shyness. It can also control overeating due to moodiness and help you maintain a positive view of everything.

The Mozart effect refers to results that listening to Mozart’s music improves brain performance (Wikipedia).  A study showed that children who listened to classical music increased their IQ permanently. They also tried this on students studying before a test. Some students were asked to listen to Mozart while studying, while the others studied with no music. After the exam, results showed that the students who listened to music before the test answered more accurately than those who didn’t listen to music.

Psychology experts say that classical music can cleanse your soul of negative thoughts. It can give you better health, both mental and physical. It makes you emotional and lets you pour all your thoughts out. It releases all your pain and hidden anger. In goes the music, out go all the risks of high blood pressure and hypertension.

Lastly, classical music can energize you. Whether you need a recharge for your daily workout after a busy day or the inspiration your conscience can’t give you before a competition, classical can speed up your brain waves and energize your body with the electric spark of sound. Bizet’s “March of the Toreadors” from Carmen can do a better deal of waking you up than your feeble alarm clock. It will also give you the strength and energy to do your best during a presentation or get you the winning side of the argument.

You see now what you can get from classical music? Not only will you become smarter and more creative, you will be optimistic and energetic. I’m not telling you to hang up your fan t-shirt for good and start being a classical music addict. You have to be the one to decide.
