MANILA, Philippines – Amir Khan wants to use Manny Pacquiao as a stepping stone to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
It’s that simple as far as the 28-year-old British star is concerned. He thinks that once he beats Pacquiao, he can lure Mayweather out of retirement.
Talks are on between Khan’s team and Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum. Things look positive so far for the fight being made in February or April next year.
Pacquiao said he has no problem fighting Khan, his former training and sparring partner.
“I’m okay,” he told The STAR a few days ago.
Khan has his plans laid out, and step one is to get the fight against Pacquiao. Step two is to beat the Filipino superstar. Step three is to get a date with Mayweather.
“I want to fight Manny Pacquiao next because if I beat him, maybe that will make Floyd Mayweather come out of retirement to fight me,” Khan told www.boxingscene.com.
“The public demand would be huge,” he added.
Khan also thinks that Mayweather will go for one more fight because at 49-0 he doesn’t have a hold at boxing’s all-time record he now shares with Rocky Marciano.
If Mayweather wants to be remembered as “The Best Ever” he will have to shoot for that 50th victory – sooner or later.
That fight could be against Khan if you ask him.
“I think Floyd Mayweather will have one more fight. He’s on 49-0 and he knows that. He’s got one more fight left in him,” said Khan.
He’s dying to get the big fight, and after he failed to land it against Mayweather, now he’s pushing for Pacquiao.
Khan has been making noise the past few days, telling the press he will beat Pacquiao.
It’s his way of getting that fight.
