MANILA, Philippines - Janine Pontejos exploded for 33 points as defending champion Centro Escolar University-CaféFrance downed Far Eastern University-Multimotors, 74-64, to top the first round elims of the Smart-PCABL fourth Dickies Cup at the Philippine Buddhacare gym in Quezon City last Sunday.
The Lady Stallions took charge early, 20-13, then Mary Ann Dologue and Cristine Caranto joined the scoring spree en route to their fourth win in five outings.
Pontejos highlighted her game-long brilliance with five triples. She also grabbed eight rebounds and issued seven assists in 32 minutes to bag the Dickies Player of the Game honors for the second time.
Caranto and Dologue finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively, as CEU handed FEU its third defeat in five games in the tournament sponsored CW Home Depot, Powerhouse, K-Tech Sports, Inc., Dickies Underwear and Jumbo Plastic Linoleum.
Meantime, University of Santo Tomas notched its second straight win by outlasting Adamson, 76-71, to forge a four-way tie for third with University of the East, FEU and its victim.
Ateneo-San Miguel drew another stellar performance from Jolina Go to beat UE, 62-57, and jump to solo second with a 3-2 card in the six-team tournament.
Go scored eight of her 16 points in the payoff period to help Ateneo repel UE’s comeback bid.
Candice Magdaluyo and Jhenn Angeles led UST with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
