MANILA, Philippines - Young Filipino math wizards shone in the 15th Clock Tower School International Math Contests held in Valcea, Romania, winning four gold, four silver medals, as well as other awards.
One of the Philippines’ gold medalists, Kaye Janelle Yao, a second year student of Grace Christian College, also won a special cup award, for being the tournament’s top scorer, getting a perfect score in all the math problems given in the contest.
Adrian Reginald Sy, a first year student; Czarina Angela Lao, a sophomore, both of St. Jude Catholic School-Manila; and Jervis Chua, a third year student of Philippine Cultural College-Main Campus, were the three other gold medalists.
Winning the four silver medals for the country were Hubert Yao, a junior student of Iloilo Central Commercial School; Shaquille Wyan Que, a grade five pupil, and Kelsey Lim Tion Soon, a first year student, both of Grace Christian College; and Himig Marcos, third year student of Philippine Cultural College Main.
Winning a Merit Award in the contest was Adam Chan, a grade five pupil of Grace Christian College.
Team Philippines also won their share of awards in the Blitz special category of the contest, namely Kelsey Lim Tion Soon, Adrian Reginald Sy, Kaye Yao, and Hubert Yao, who won 1st prize; Shaquille Wyan Que and Czarina Angela Lao getting 2nd prize, and Himig Marcos and Jervis Chua, winning 3rd prize.
Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines, that mentored the Philippine math whiz team, expressed pride over the impressive performance of the students, whom he said worked hard to prepare for the contest.
