MANILA, Philippines — The city of Tuguegarao in Cagayan sizzled on Sunday after its temperature reached 39 degrees Celsius, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

On the same day, the heat index in Tuguegarao reached 42 degrees Celsius.

PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina yesterday said Tuguegarao’s high temperature was recorded at 4 p.m.

“It was the highest temperature, at least for this year. We expect high temperatures in major areas of the country,” Badrina said.

The public has been advised to avoid outdoor exposure as temperatures remain high even between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

PAGASA said no low-pressure area has been spotted in and outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

Citing forecasts, Badrina said the cities of Laoag in Ilocos Sur, Dagupan in Pangasinan and Cotabato as well as Palawan and Cagayan Valley, particularly Tuguegarao, are expected to experience a high heat index.
