UNDP denies supporting sex workers group

MANILA, Philippines - The United Nations Development Programme Philippines on Thursday clarified that it has not and is not supporting the Baguio-based non-government organization Women Hookers Organizing for Their Rights and Empowerment.

In a report dated February 11, 2013, philSTAR.com said WHORE is a UNDP-supported project.

However, UNDP called this a "gross factual error."

For its part, WHORE said that what it told the press was that it is a participant in a "UNDP funded project with Empower in Thailand."

"WHORE's operations are unfunded as sex work are mostly concentrated in anti-prostitution and anti-trafficiking programs," the NGO added.

WHORE has been pushing for government recognition of the profession to extend legal rights and protection for sex workers.

Following UNDP's letter, philSTAR.com has corrected the information in the story "500K Filipinos engage in prostitution"  (http://www.philstar.com/nation/2013/02/11/907592/500k-filipinos-engage-prostitution).  - Cheryl M. Arcibal
