Pastor rapped for raping daughters

The Caloocan City Police yesterday filed multiple rape charges against a 51-year-old Methodist pastor for allegedly raping his two young daughters for the last three months.

The Caloocan City Prosecutor recommended no bail for Lunafiel Peña, married, of Barangay 64, Philippine National Railways Compound, Caloocan City.

According to Inspector Virginia Tejuco, chief of the Caloocan City Police Women’s and Children’s Concerns Desk, the suspect was arrested Monday at about 8 p.m. in a friend’s house on Julian Felipe corner Atopda Streets, Barangay 8, Caloocan, by elements of the Caloocan Police Intelligence and Investigation Division.

Tejuco added that Peña had gone into hiding upon learning that police were looking for him. Investigation showed Peña raped his daughters aged 10 and 6, since January this year.

The last rape happened on March 22 in the suspect’s rented room. The report stated that Peña also beat his daughters.

Case investigator PO1 Johanna Lavarias said that the suspect raped his daughters whenever he was drunk.

He also allegedly threatened to beat them up again if they reported the incident to authorities.

The victims, however, told their uncle, Nardino Peña, 49, about the rapes last March 24. Nardino, a younger brother of the suspect, filed the complaint with the police.

In an interview, Nardino said his brother has been separated from his wife for sometime now.

The girls had been staying with their mother in San Pedro, Laguna until the suspect took custody of them in December last year.

Nardino added that his brother was confined at the National Mental Hospital for a year until he escaped.

"But I think he’s just pretending to be insane," Nardino told reporters in Filipino.

He added the girls have stopped going to school since their father took them under his care. Peña is now detained at the Caloocan detention cell.
