There is a slight costume-y feel from the ‘20s and a major comeback from the ‘80s, to name a few. Yes, I feel your shock and awe as you contemplate Mom’s shoulder-padded jacket circa 1986 (don’t be too literal; leave that where it belongs — in your mom’s closet).
Trends may reappear, but always in a more updated version. The same goes for beauty: all major makeup mistakes in the beauty bible happened in the ‘80s. Our answer to that: either those trends never again see the light of day, or we in the present stand up to the responsibility of doing some major alterations.
Gild trip
One does not need to get all jaundiced about gold. Apply bronzer on the face, then sweep a muted medium gold from the lids to the crease. To make eyes appear larger, line upper and lower lids with black liner and set upper and lower lashes with mascara. Sweep an apricot shade on the cheeks and keep lips bare with nude lipstick.
Lip love
We’re seeing a lot of deep, jeweled tones, and the best way to finish off the look is with a strong lip and clean, clear and dewy skin as a backdrop (foundation applied sparingly paired with a luminizer should do the trick). I personally love the allure of a deep wine, burgundy or ruby shade. Whip out the lip liner (a nude shade is best), fill in lips with color and start smackin’.
Color blocking
There is no need to channel Cyndi Lauper; the ‘80s doesn’t have to be that horrendous. There is a way to go about using all the colors in the rainbow on the eyes, cheeks and lips without resembling a drag queen. To be on the safe side, choose pink on the lips (you may go for that Pepto Bismol pink, or something less severe like a baby pink). For the eyes, use a neutral (or at least close to it) shadow as base, like yellow; contour the eyes with a darker colored shadow, like gray or dark green. You may choose your poison with the liner: blue, green, aqua — the more, the merrier. As for the cheeks, you might want to tone the whole look down with a light dusting of pink.
Dapper flapper
Okay, so this look may be a bit too severe, but the holiday season (not to mention Halloween) is just around the corner and you need a look that will make you stand out. Apply base on the lids to the creases and contour with taupe shadow. Line the upper and lower lids with brown or black eyeliner. Then, apply false lashes on the upper and lower lash lines. As for the lips, draw a precise line and fill in with burgundy lipstick.
Punk’s not dead
Punk groups in the ‘80s may have started the entire smoky eye trend without us knowing. The mantra behind this is the darker, the better. With medium gray shadow, apply from the lid to the just below the brow bone, then line the upper and lower lids with black liner and smudge. Two coats of black mascara can help open up the eyes. Apply pink blush on the cheeks, then sweep on mauve color on the lips.
