2,050 qualify for 2006 S & T scholarships

"The results of the 2006 S&T undergraduate scholarship examination of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute are out."

This was announced by DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro in signing the complete list of qualifiers, including 1,749 students who made it to the RA 7687 Science and Technology Scholarships and 301 for the DOST-SEI Merit Scholarships.

Alabastro said this year’s qualifiers were selected from a total of 15,835 graduating high school students who took the exam last Dec. 4 in 97 test centers nationwide.

Dr. Ester Ogena, director of Science Education Institute, said the scholars would receive tuition fees, a monthly stipend, a book allowance, transportation fees, and health insurance, among other things. She added that starting SY 2006-2007, the new qualifiers will enjoy better privileges including an increase in the tuition fee subsidy and monthly stipends.

Qualifiers will receive a notice of their scholarship award from DOST-SEI or the DOST Regional Offices stating the date of orientation and contract signing. Each qualifier is required to report to the designated venue with a parent/guardian and to bring the following documents: accompanying parent/guardian’s 2006 residence certificate and fee for documentary stamp and notarization fee. A legal guardian is required to present his/her affidavit of guardianship.

The DOST-SEI undergraduate scholarship program is offered annually to talented and deserving high school graduates who would like to pursue four- or five-year baccalaureate degrees in priority science and technology fields. Aside from undergraduate scholarships, new graduate scholarship schemes will be offered starting this year to further enhance S&T expertise. These scholarship programs aim to produce and develop high-quality human resources who will take active participation and leadership roles in the S&T activities of the country. Currently, there are 7,622 scholars being supported under the RA 7687 Scholarship Program, while 943 are beneficiaries of the Merit Scholarship Program.
