Why Kris cut her hair

Curtain-raisers:

= Signs that a showbiz couple is about to split up:

• They resort to excessive PDA (Public Display of Affection) to attract attention.

• They post on Instagram photos of their diurnal activities no matter how trivial they are (like what they eat as midnight snack).

• They deny rumors that they’re squabbling over a third party (on either side).

• They attend socials minus each other.

• They send feelers that they are planning to walk down the aisle.

Name some?

Oh well, I bet you know who they are.

= Even if there are tell-tale signs, some couples confirm that they have been going steady (after all) only when they break up — and that’s when they start badmouthing and blaming  each other. Reacting to what his immediate ex-actress-girlfriend said were the reasons for their recent breakup (denied to death for a long while), a vacationing (malingering?) actor posted something like this (“Do you think I give a f--k?”) on his Instagram account. With his four-letter character, it’s no wonder that his girlfriend split from him.

= The P17M first-day gross of his “comeback” starrer (after that ugly incident), Star Cinema’s Da Possessed, is positive proof that Vhong Navarro’s drawing power wasn’t diminished, never mind if it opened on Black Saturday. Was it a sympathy vote for Vhong who hasn’t completely recovered from that traumatic experience?

Just when talks about her and Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista was simmering down, Kris Aquino made everybody sit up and wonder what she was up to next after she appeared with her hair cut short on the ABS-CBN late-night show Aquino & Abunda.

They say that there are several reasons why a lady cuts her hair abruptly, to wit:

• She’s tired of washing and shampooing her long hair every morning;

• She’s rebelling against something (such as unbearable parental control, like what Sarah Geronimo reportedly did);

• She simply wants to look, well, different; or

• She’s broken-hearted.

But Kris is definitely not that — broken-hearted, that is. In fact, according to those close to her, Kris felt more relieved than depressed over her and Herbert’s failed short-lived “work in progress,” and is actually looking forward to finding a new prospect. (Ready for her “explosive” revelation soon?)

Kris does look good in her short hairdo cut by Aureo of Jing Monis (of Propaganda) barely 48 hours after she and company (sons Joshua and Bimby, with friends Vice Ganda, Paul Cabral and Erich Gonzales) came back on Black Saturday from a short Lenten holiday in Hong Kong.

Earlier last Monday, she even did a shoot for an endorsement and she surprised everybody, not excluding her co-host Boy Abunda, when she showed up “like that” on the show later that day. No problem because she has just shot another Pantene commercial and her next shoot for it is three months away. By then, Kris’ hair should have grown longer.

When a friend asked why she cut her hair, Kris only smiled, “Kasi may pinagdadaanan ako, eh.”

Hmmmm, your guess is as good as anybody’s what that pinagdadaanan is, isn’t it?

Because, as I said, she looks good with short hair (reminiscent of Jennifer Lawrence’s look when she started promoting for her starrer Hunger Games: Catching Fire late last year), I won’t be surprised if Kris will set a trend.

(Note: Hi, James! Were you asking why your “ex” cut her hair? Now you know!)

Oliver has also dressed up an

Oscar awardee

Funfare was happy to catch up with Hollywood Filipino designer Oliver Tolentino who’s been working out of his Makati boutique this month after returning to the Philippines after the Oscars. (He and partner Andrew are going back to L.A. tonight.)

While many know that director Jennifer Lee wore Oliver’s gown when she won for Frozen, not as many know that when Lee walked up on stage, Oliver became the first Filipino designer in 53 years to be worn at the Academy Awards by an Oscar winner. The first was Pitoy Moreno who designed the gown of Rita Moreno (no relation) when she won Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story many years ago.

Oliver shared with Funfare more recent news since that milestone:

= Actress Minnie Driver wears Oliver’s gown in the new Claritin TV commercial ad campaign that runs in North America. People may remember Driver from the film Good Will Hunting and the TV show Will & Grace. She currently co-stars in the TV series About A Boy.

= Next month, he’s joining the first ever fashion show in New York City’s Central Park Zoo. He’s going to show an eco-only collection featuring Philippine native fabrics and calado technique embroidery. It’s a charity show that will raise money to protect African elephants from slaughter. Organized by the Gabby Wild Foundation, Elephantasia will be held in Manhattan’s Central Park Zoo on Friday, May 30.

= A-Lister Jessica Alba wore a piña dress of Oliver’s for a Redbook magazine photo shoot last month.

Filipinos should be proud of the efforts Oliver is making in promoting our fabrics not just internationally, but in Hollywood. In addition to Alba, previous celebrities to wear Oliver’s Philippine fabric creations include Carrie Underwood, Emmy Rossum, Maggie Grace, Sophia Bush and Maria Menounos.

We wish Oliver safe travels back to Los Angeles and beyond. His Makati boutique for ready-to-wear gowns and cocktail is located in Legaspi Village, Makati City. (For more info, call  [02] 856-7088 or log on to www.OliverTolentino.com.)
