CEBU, Philippines - Cagayan de Oro City – The team captains of the different teams seeing action in the Philippine Airlines Men’s Interclub Golf Tournament will gather this morning at Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club to submit their lineups and to decide on the next host of the event.
Cebu is among the two areas being considered as the next host of the country’s oldest running and biggest interclub amateur golf championship. The other probable host is Davao.
The two clubs that have earlier expressed intention to bring the event back to Cebu are Mactan Island Golf Club and Club Filipino Incorporada de Cebu.
Retired General Rodante Joya, former general manager of MIGC, said that they will push through with the offer to bring the tournament back to Cebu.
Davao’s bid will be bannered by Apo Golf and Country Club and the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club.
Cebu was the regular host of the event when the old Club Filipino course was still at the now Cebu Business Park.
The last time Cebu hosted the event was in 2001 where Cebu Country Club and Club Filipino served as the venues.
Sources, however, told The Freeman that Davao is most likely to get the hosting, but added that the captains will decide on this matter.
The Cebu teams that are seeing action in the men’s regular tournament are Alta Vista Golf and Country Club, Cebu Country Club, Club Filipino, and Mactan Island Golf Club.
Alta Vista has been bracketed under the Championship division due to a technicality in the submission of the club’s membership roster during the team captains meeting last year.
Cebu Country club, on the other hand, is seen as a top contender if it will be bracketed in the Founders division.
The classifications will also be known later today.
Meanwhile, Alta Vista finished higher than reported in yesterday’s story as the team total is 525 and not 425.
Team captain Loloy Sabuga said that the team shot rounds of 137, 119, 137 and 132.
The men’s event will be using the PAL Points System and each team is allowed to field a maximum of five players per round with only the four best to count for the team total for the day.
No player can play more than two rounds.
The competition officially starts tomorrow yet at Pueblo de Oro and Del Monte Golf Club in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. (FREEMAN)
