Rep. Gullas speaks at anti-trafficking training

CEBU, Philippines – Cebu first district Representative Eduardo Gullas spoke at an anti-trafficking training held last week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The training on the Protection of Trafficking in Persons Victims (TIP) and Prosecution of Offenders Abroad, which was held from November 17 to 19, was jointly organized by the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Justice.

In attendance were 35 Philippine Embassy officials assigned in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member-countries. They comprise Consular Officers, Labor Attaches, Welfare Attaches and Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) Officers.

Topics included the global context of TIP and the role of the foreign service in the prevention and prosecution of TIP, a primer on R.A. 9208 (the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003) and other related Philippine laws on trafficking, detection and identification and evidence of TIP, preparing a sworn statement, treatment of victims including assistance and protection and the Philippine anti-trafficking in persons database.

Aside from Gullas, other resource speakers were representatives from the DFA and the DOJ. (FREEMAN)
