Red tide remains in Zambo, Misamis waters

MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) yesterday reiterated that the algae that causes red tide is still present in Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur, Murcielagos Bay in Zamboanga del Norte, and Misamis Occidental.

The red tide algae, which causes paralytic shellfish poisoning, has been present in these waters for over a year now.

The BFAR said all types of shellfish and acetes sp (alamang) from these areas are not safe for human consumption.

Fish, squiºds, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided they are fresh and washed properly. Internal organs such as gills and intestines must also be removed.
