The local government of Pasig City will distribute 68 motorcycles to 30 barangays today to help barangay watchmen and civilian volunteers patrol their areas of jurisdiction to prevent petty crimes and enforce city ordinances.
“The 350-strong city police force would focus on big or criminal syndicates that operate in the city while the so-called force multipliers would enforce ordinances,” Pasig City Mayor Robert Eusebio said.
The city government recently recruited at least 1,000 personnel to help the police implement ordinances, direct the flow of vehicular traffic and make law enforcers more visible.
Eusebio said 300 of the recruits were detailed at the Batas-Ciudad Enforcement Office (BCEO) while another 300 personnel were assigned at the Traffic and Parking Management Office.
The remaining 400 are mostly professional motorcycle riders who vowed to lend a hand to the various peace and order projects of the city.
The newly bought motorcycles will be turned over to respective barangay officials during the flag-raising ceremony today at the City Hall.
Eusebio said the Napico Homeowners Federation will also receive their patrol motorcycles to curb, if not eliminate, petty crimes in the barangay.
Eusebio said 350 policemen are not enough to maintain peace and order in Pasig City. He said they had been requesting additional policemen but the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters said it is still processing applicants.
He said the city government is also increasing its presence in the Ortigas Commercial District in a bid to create a climate of peace and attract local and foreign investors to pour capital into the city. – Non Alquitran
