CAMANAVA cops hit ‘push-pull’ promotions

Northern Metro policemen, promoted recently for protecting Malacañang during last year’s May 1 siege, assailed yesterday what they called a "push and pull" promotion system of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The sources, requesting anonymity, said they were surprised upon receiving their checks representing their salary last Friday, wherein the amount reflected was reverted to their salary on their previous rank. The officers said they were puzzled as to why they were demoted to their previous rank without giving them any notice. "This is not only demoralizing on our part but is also humiliating," the apparently irritated police officers told The STAR.

They said that though the PNP hierarchy did not formally inform them of relegating them back to their previous rank, the salary they received Friday simply stated it all.

"What are we, a bunch of rascals?" a police inspector, one of hundreds of police officers promoted for bravely droving away some 40,000 mob who attacked Malacañang during last year’s Labor Day violent protest, said.

"What’s this, laban o bawi?" he said. The officers complained that they are dedicated policemen who are true to their sworn duties but said, the recent development does not speak well of their commitment. "How could you expect policemen to do a better job if the PNP hierarchy itself can’t do well its job?" they asked.

The police officers said that if the PNP really wanted to look into the "May 1" promotion, it would first investigate high ranking officials who even earned a "star or additional stars" by capitalizing on the event. – Pete Laude
