CEBU, Philippines — After organizing a free training seminar and a national tournament, the Cebu Weightlifting Association (CWA) embarks on another project, putting up a training center at the Sisters of Mary School-Boystown in Minglanilla.
“We will make Sisters of Mary the model school for our grassroots development program. We are here to give them the opportunity to be able to go to college through weightlifting or if not, hopefully, be part of the national team and be an Olympian someday,” said CWA President Felix “Boy” O. Tiukinhoy, Jr.
With over two thousand underprivileged students, Tiukinhoy said SMS could be a goldmine for weightlifting.
CWA promised to provide not only equipment but also a legitimate coach for the training of SMS student-athletes.
“We will be providing the equipment and a coach to handle the program for free,” said Tiukinhoy.
In return, SMS will be providing a place that will serve as the training center.
The administration of SMS readily agreed to Tiukinhoy’s proposal and looks forward to an even productive and active lifestyle for its students.
Right now, SMS is actively involved in various sports such as football, basketball, table tennis, athletics, badminton, arnis and swimming among others. It has also sent some of its athletes to national and invitational events outside of Cebu.
