CEBU, Philippines — The University of Southern Philippines Foundation scored a big win against the more favored Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu to book a spot at the semifinals in the boys under-18 class of the 17th Aboitiz Football Cup at the Cebu Cisty Sports Center yesterday.
USPF was considered as the underdog going into the match, but they showed excellent offensive game to beat SHS-AdC.
It was the same Sacred Heart School-Ateneo team that dethroned the Cebu City Niños in the football event of the recently concluded Central Visayas Regional Atheletic Association Meet in Balamban, Cebu.
SHS-AdC finished the group stage with seven points to placed second in the rankings of Group B while Group A's USP-F also finished second in the group stage also with seven points.
Meanwhile, SHS-AdC’s under-13 squad secured the spot at the semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Bright Academy. SHS-AdC topped Group E with nine points.
In the other game at the under-13 class, Consolacion FC also advanced to the semis over Tabor Hill, 1-0. Consolacion FC also topped their group with also nine points.
The rest of the quarterfinals matches will still be played today at the Cebu City Sports Center.
The organizers aim to finish the entire younger group age competition before the end of the month so they can start the action in the men’s and ladies open, Inter-compnay, Inter-BPO and 38-above divisions. (FREEMAN)
