Councilman claims assault by relatives of ex-mayor

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A barangay councilman of Ibabao-Estancia has reported to authorities that he was allegedly assaulted by three relatives of former mayor Jonas Cortes early Tuesday morning.

Councilman Noel Flores Quimque identified the suspects as Ian Luigi Cortes, Ejay Cortes, and Julius Soon, also known as “Bantam.” The incident reportedly occurred outside Quimque’s residence around 1:00 a.m.

Quimque told The Freeman that Ian Luigi, son of Barangay Centro Captain Ian Cortes and a relative of the former mayor, had called him and asked to speak outside his home.

“Pag-gawas nako, giingnan dayon ko nga hambogero ko. Unya kalit lang ko gihapak og helmet sa likod. Diritso na dayon og kulata ang tulo nila,” said Quimque.

Quimque said he suffered multiple bruises and injuries from the alleged assault. The attackers reportedly fled as nearby civilians began to approach the scene. However, Ian Luigi’s motorcycle and a mobile phone believed to belong to “Bantam” were left behind.

Police later found registration documents in the motorcycle’s utility box, confirming that the vehicle is registered under Ian Luigi’s name.

The Freeman reached out to Ian Luigi and Ejay Cortes via their respective messenger accounts but received no response as of press time.

Quimque said he plans to press charges against the suspects, whom he described as “abusive.” He also urged accountability, regardless of political or familial affiliations.

“Nagtoo man gud ko nga makig-uli na siya kay humana baya ang election. Gitabangan man hinoon ko nila og kulata,” he said.

Quimque is a known political supporter of Mandaue City Rep. Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano-Dizon, while the suspects are said to be aligned with the former mayor.  FPL (CEBU NEWS)
