CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government is gearing up for the opening of classes for the new school year, especially in public schools, on June 16.

Outgoing Mayor Raymond Garcia told reporters yesterday that he is set to call for a meeting with the Department of Education’s Cebu City division office along with the barangay officials, Philippine National Police, Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Cebu City Transportation Office, and other relevant agencies to ensure a safe opening of classes.

“In general, we are preparing. Okay man tanan. We have always done this every opening sa eskwela, so it’s really business as usual when it comes to the opening of classes,” Garcia said.

Along with this, Garcia also said that the city has already started the process of purchasing school kits for the school children here.

“I will be signing tingali it within this month. So, if ever, ang new administration na ang makahatag,” Garcia said.

The city government has been doing this every new school-year. The school kits include school supplies and uniforms based on a city ordinance which the late Councilor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba and Garcia himself authored.

Garcia, however, said it will now be up to the new administration led by Mayor-elect Nestor Archival as to when they will distribute these kits.

“Naa na na sa bag-ong administration og ihatag ba na nila this year or ihatag nalang na nila next year sa new opening,” said Garcia. — (FREEMAN)
