DOH issues White Alert for Holy Week

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Health Central Visayas Center for Health Development has declared a "code white alert" and issued health reminders in the observance of Holy Week or Semana Santa 2025.
The code white alert ensures that medical personnel and emergency response teams are on standby across the region to provide immediate care to patients during the expected increase in public activities.
In a regional circular, DOH-7 required all medical center chiefs, health officers, and other concerned medical personnel to promote public health and safety during the religious observance.
The regional circular and signed by DOH-7 regional director Jaime Bernadas contains 12 key tips to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals engaging in travel, fasting, and religious activities.
On top of the list is the reminder for those travelling by car to inspect their vehicle’s condition, including tires, fluids, gas, and brakes.
People are also advised to remain alert and mindful of their belongings, especially when using public transportation or visiting crowded places.
For those joining religious processions or other physically-demanding activities, DOH emphasizes the importance of knowing one's physical limits and taking breaks as needed.
"If participating in fasting, do so responsibly. Consult your doctor if you have underlying health conditions before fasting," reads a portion in the circular.
Bringing a first-aid kit, including necessary medications, is also highly recommended for travelers and pilgrims alike.
In addition, DOH-7 encourages people to carry bottled water or oral rehydration salts to avoid heat-related illnesses. Umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses should be used to shield oneself from the sun, along with the application of sunblock or sunscreen.
The health department also issued food safety reminders, particularly for those buying meals from unfamiliar vendors. Practicing good hygiene is also vital especially hand washing, to prevent the spread of diseases in large gatherings.
The public is urged to avoid excessive consumption of sugary drinks and maintain a balanced diet. The circular also underscores the importance of rest and reflection during the Holy Week, recommending adequate sleep and meaningful spiritual engagement.
People are reminded to manage stress and keep a strong mental outlook throughout the season.
The DOH also recommends avoiding any risky behaviors and maintaining overall wellness for both physical and spiritual health. — (FREEMAN)
