Cebu FC makes fans happy in first home game of the year
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu FC Gentle Giants did not disappoint their Cebuano fans as they spanked Mendiola FC 1991, 3-1, in their first home game of the year last Saturday night, February 8, at the Dynamic Herb-Borromeo Sports Complex in South Road Properties (SRP).
Newcomer Gabriel Henrique Silva scored the opening goal at the 60th minute when he headed in a cross from Jeremiah “JB” Borlongan from the far right side of the pitch.
It was just one of Borlongan’s many assists that created goal-scoring chances for which he was aptly rewarded with the Man of the Match honors.
“I’m happy because we were able to get the win,” said Borlongan. “But again we have to demand more of ourselves if we really wanna keep winning and get the top spot here in the league. So we’ll just keep on working hard and pushing in the training.”
Four minutes after Silva’s ice-breaker, Daniel Bernan Gadia charged in the middle between defenders to give the Gentle Giants their second goal.
Cebu FC’s third and last goal was delivered by Japanese Rintarou Hama, who converted a penalty in stoppage time after Jaime Rosquillo went down in the goalmouth scramble during a set piece.
Milad Behgandom prevented Mendiola from going home goalless when he took advantage of a confusion between CFC goalkeeper Florencio “Jun” Badelic and the CFC defenders.
With the win, the Gentle Giants reclaimed the fourth spot with 17 points on five wins, two draws, and two losses.
Cebu FC will face next the PFF National Youth Team on Wednesday, February 12, still at its turf.
