Property sector calls on new leaders to deliver on pledges

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu’s real estate industry has joined other business leaders in urging newly elected local government officials to swiftly act on their campaign pledges and resolve long-standing governance challenges.
Anthony O. Leuterio, president of A Better Real Estate Philippines (ABREP) and founder of the property platform Filipino Homes, said there is growing public expectation for tangible outcomes following the electoral transition.
“Now is the time to prove they made the right decision,” he said in an interview.
Leuterio called on local leaders to prioritize systemic reforms, including universal access to healthcare and the gradual phasing out of short-term financial assistance programs such as “ayuda” in favor of sustainable economic initiatives.
He proposed the creation of an entrepreneurship committee aimed at supporting startups and small businesses through training and capital access.
“Businesses generate employment. The government must engage the private sector and identify how it can facilitate growth,” he added, emphasizing the need for structured dialogue between policymakers and the business community.
He also underscored the importance of greater coordination between Cebu City and the Province to drive cohesive development strategies.
Additionally, Leuterio expressed support for the continuation of the P20 rice program as a measure to mitigate food insecurity and support low-income families.
Beyond real estate, Leuterio advocated for stronger investment in tourism, which he described as an underutilized national asset.
“Tourism is the true wealth of the Philippines, yet it remains overlooked,” he said, arguing that targeted promotional campaigns could unlock revenues exceeding those currently enjoyed by regional peers such as Thailand and Vietnam.
Leuterio’s remarks reflect mounting pressure on local and national officials to stimulate inclusive economic growth and position the Philippines more competitively on the global stage.
