MANILA, Philippines — One of the rapidly rising prodigies in the world of chess has been included in this year’s list of young stars in Asia.

Filipino chess wunderkind Daniel Quizon was one of the sportsmen named in Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 in Asia.

Quizon, who became the Philippines’ latest grandmaster at 20 years old last year, was included in the list for entertainment and sports.

He defeated Igor Efimov in the 45th FIDE Chess Olympian in Hungary last September, where he got the Grandmaster title.

“Quizon has been the reigning Philippine Chess Champion since 2021. He was undefeated in the ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships 2023 and dominated the Hanoi Grandmaster Chess Tournament in March 2024,” Forbes said in the article.

“Quizon has a FIDE rating of 2461 in standard chess, 2317 in rapid and 2394 in blitz.”

The list for entertainment and sports also included Filipino girl group BINI.

Aside from Quizon, other sportsmen in the list were fellow chess grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju; paralympians Sheetal Devi and Zakia Khudadadi; football player Mary Fowler; and Olympians Veddriq Leonardo, Rizki Juniansyah, Li Wenwen, Koki Kano, Lim Si-hyeon, Kaylee McKeown, Arshad Nadeem, Shinnosuke Oka, Arisa Trew and Zou Jingyuan.
