Huey-Inglot moves to third round

MANILA, Philippines - Fil-Am Treat Conrad Huey and Great Britain’s Dominic Inglot overpowered Czech Republic’s Lukas Dlouhy and Italy’s Daniele Bracciali, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the third round of the US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

The emphatic victory, which lasted only 53 minutes, sent Huey-Inglot duo, seeded 16th, to the next round versus the winner of the second-round match between the third-seeded Spanish tandem of Marc Lopez and Marcel Granollers and Australians Chris Guccione and Bernard Tomic.

Huey, the spearhead of the country’s Davis Cup team set to take on New Zealand at the Plantation Bay in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu this month, and Inglot survived the stubborn Austrian duo of Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), in the opening round.

Huey, who turned 28 last Aug. 28, is seeking to do good in this annual Grand Slam event to earn enough points to improve his current world rankings of No. 32.

He made it to as high as No. 24 last June.

Huey also won his mixed doubles match after he and American Raquel Kops-Jones bucked a first set loss to eke out a pulsating 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 triumph over the American tandem of Donald Young and Victoria Duval.

Huey and Kops-Jones will next clash with eighth pick Marcelo Melo of Brazil and Liezel Huber of the US, who barged into the second round with a 4-6, 7-6 (10), 10-4 squeaker of a win over Romania’s Horia Tecau and India’s Sania Mirza.
