MANILA, Philippines - Members of the Powerade-Team Pilipinas are raring to slug it out with the tall Australian selection in their upcoming two-game goodwill series on April 3 and 5 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Excitement and the chance to prove itself rank high in the Asian Championship-bound national squad reactions as the Nationals shift their training into high gear for the encounter with the Hoopdreamz Great White Sharks.
“I think it will be great competition and experience for us because the Australian league is very good,” said San Miguel Beer forward Mick Pennisi, who traces his roots in Australia. “It will also let us know what kind of shape we’re in as the RP team.”
Guard Jared Dillinger agrees.
“It will be a great opportunity for our team to compete against a foreign team for the first time,” the Talk ‘N Text rookie said. “It will gauge our readiness for the upcoming tournaments.”
Point guard Jayjay Helterbrand says the games will provide a clearer picture of where the Nationals are in their preparation.
“It will give us a chance to see what our weaknesses and strong points are,” said the Barangay Ginebra star. “Also, it’s a way for us to gel and build on our chemistry.”
Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine and Ryan Reyes of Sta. Lucia Realty say that beyond the initial excitement, the team looks forward to the challenge of “going up against a tall and physical” opponent.
“It will help us to learn certain things we need to work on,” said Norwood.
“It will help us get ready for the upcoming tournaments in the future,” said Reyes.
