Viado welcomes corruption probe

MANILA, Philippines — Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado yesterday welcomed President Marcos’ order to look into corruption allegations against him.
“We trust that an impartial and comprehensive investigation will bring clarity, establish accountability and strengthen the public’s trust in our institutions,” he said.
Viado has voiced suspicion that the smear job against him could be linked to detained Chinese businessman Tony Yang, brother of former presidential economic adviser Michael Yang.
Tony Yang, a suspected financier of a Philippine offshore gaming operator, was arrested by immigration personnel on Sept. 19, 2024 for his alleged involvement in human trafficking.
In an unsigned document received on June 5 by the Office of the President, immigration employees accused Viado of corrupt practices.
