BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has sought a P10-million assistance from the Department of Agriculture (DA)to stop the infestation of red-striped soft-scale insects (RSSI) in sugarcane plantations in Negros Occidental.

The request, which will be submitted to Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, was decided during a meeting between the SRA and the DA on Friday, according to Jose Albert Barrogo, chief of the DA-Negros Island Region.

The SRA said that 87 hectares of sugarcane fields in 11 towns and cities have been affected by the RSSI infestation.

Pest infestations are reported in the cities of Bago, Cadiz, La Carlota, Silay, Talisay and Victorias as well as in the towns of E.B. Magalona, La Castellana, Manapla, Murcia and Toboso.
