MANILA, Philippines — A municipal mayor in Maguindanao del Sur and his wife were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a vice mayor.

Agents of the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested South Upi Mayor Reynalbert Insular and his wife, Janet, in Barangay Making in Parang town located in the nearby province of Maguindanao del Norte.

CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the couple’s arrest was based on a warrant for murder, frustrated murder and attempted murder issued by the Cotabato City Regional Trial Court Branch 27 on May 19.

No bail was recommended for the suspects’ temporary liberty.

The arrest came after the suspects were implicated in the murder of Roldan Benito, vice mayor of South Upi, and his security aide, Weng Marcos, in an ambush in Barangay Pandan on Aug. 2, 2024.

Benito’s wife Analyn, their child along with a student were wounded in the attack, police records showed.

Torre described the suspects’ arrest as proof of the CIDG’s commitment to conduct thorough investigations, file airtight cases and put criminals behind bars.

A special investigation task group formed to look into the attack pointed to the Insular couple as alleged masterminds in the murder of Benito.

The victims were in a pick-up truck when gunmen, who were waiting on the road, fired at them.

The gunmen had escaped before responding volunteer community watchmen and barangay leaders arrived at the scene.
