BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has allowed people to carry out farming and other essential activities inside the six-kilometer extended danger zone of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island.

The OCD said residents may enter the extended danger zone from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. to tend to their farms and livestock.

The entry was allowed after state volcanologists noted that Kanlaon’s acitivity has simmered down since a five-minute moderate explosive eruption occurred on May 13.

Donato Sermeno III, chief of the OCD-Negros Island Region, said border control guards have been directed to monitor the entry of farmers and residents.

Farmers who need to harvest their produce have been advised to coordinate and secure permits from their local government units, Sermeno said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Western Visayas has distributed cash assistance to families displaced by Kanlaon.

Up to 1,711 families have received the cash assistance amounting to P5,775 each.

The recipients were residents of La Carlota, La Castellana and Bago City, areas that were severely affected by ashfall and sulfuric emissions from the volcano.
