COTABATO CITY , Philippines — The former chief executive of the defunct Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) has been elected governor of Basilan.

Incumbent Basilan Rep. Mujiv Hataman was proclaimed governor on Wednesday by the Provincial Board of Canvassers at the capitol. He defeated his nephew, Jay Salliman.

Basilan Gov. Hadjiman Salliman was also proclaimed vice governor.

Hataman had served as regional governor of the ARMM for two terms before he was elected congressman of Basilan in 2019.

The ARMM has been replaced with a more politically and administratively empowered Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Hataman’s wife, Sitti Djalia Turabin, secured a fresh term as mayor of Isabela City.
