P20-per-kilo rice rolls out in Cebu

MANILA, Philippines — Up to 35,000 bags of well-milled rice from Mindoro arrived in Cebu on Monday, kicking off the National Food Authority (NFA)’s unloading operations for the pilot run of the P20-per-kilo rice program.

The shipment was part of the subsidized rice initiative being piloted in Bohol, Cebu, Siquijor and Southern Leyte, with a combined order of 673,000 bags scheduled for delivery in December.

NFA Administrator Larry Lacson said the delivery was part of the 600,000 bags ordered by Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia.

The provincial government of Siquijor ordered 40,000 bags; Southern Leyte, 30,000, and Bohol, 3,000 bags.

The program is a joint effort of the Department of Agriculture, through the Food Terminal Inc., and participating local government units.
