MANILA, Philippines — Criminal charges have been filed against four Chinese nationals for alleged smuggling of white onions in Mexico, Pampanga, according to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the suspects – Shengren, Jialong, Wei and Dewen – were charged for violating the Anti-Agricultural Sabotage Act in relation to the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Law.

The suspects were arrested Saturday in a raid on a warehouse in Barangay Laug, where white onions valued at P1.7 million were found.

The raid was based on information that the suspects were involved in the smuggling of onions from China.

The contraband was reportedly  misdeclared as chicken karaage or Japanese fried chicken.
