MANILA, Philippines — A 20-year-old man collapsed and died while waiting in line for an ayuda payout in Marikina on Monday.

The victim, a delivery rider, was among the people queueing for financial assistance at the Marikina Sports Center when he fell unconscious, city police public information officer Capt. Julius Criste said in a phone interview.

The victim was brought to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival at past 5 p.m.

Citing initial medical findings, Criste said the victim, whom he did not identify, had dilated pupils and had no pulse when he was brought to the hospital.

Police said there was no stampede during the payout, adding that the venue was not packed.

“The line of beneficiaries was not that long,” Criste said.

The victim’s family is not inclined to press for an investigation as they are convinced that he died of a natural cause, according to police.
